Brent Leatherwood, president of the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, faced political backlash for praising President Biden, but emerged victorious after board chairman Kevin Smith stepped down.
Leatherwood’s statement, posted on the ERLC website, commended Biden for prioritizing the nation over personal ambition and walking away from power. Critics argue Biden bowed to pressure from donors and party leaders.
Despite calls for his resignation, the 81-year-old president vowed to remain in office until January, maintaining that he has not given up the presidency.
The ERLC executive board initially announced Leatherwood’s removal due to his remarks about Biden, but later clarified the decision came from one person, Smith, not the entire board.
Smith, the first black chairman of the ERLC executive board, expressed his belief in a consensus to oust Leatherwood but acknowledged acting without a formal vote.
