The sudden destruction caused by this disaster has brought profound grief and struggles to the people and churches of Kerala, Pillay noted. On behalf of the World Council of Churches, I extend our deepest condolences and heartfelt solidarity to all those affected.
He acknowledged the tremendous challenges people are facing. Lives, livelihoods, and infrastructure have been destroyed, and communities are facing loss and deep grief, he wrote. In these challenging times, it is my prayer that God’s presence, peace, and strength will sustain you and accompany you in recovering from this tragedy.
Pillay expressed gratitude for the thousands of people assisting in the rescue, recovery, and humanitarian response. The World Council of Churches stands in solidarity with you, he wrote. We pray for the safety of those who have been displaced, for the comfort of those who mourn, and for the strength of those who are tirelessly working to provide relief.
He assured the people and churches of Kerala that they are not alone. The global ecumenical community is walking with you, upholding you in prayer, and working alongside you to bring hope and healing, he wrote.
